Alpine Express is a holiday that combines three of the world’s greatest Alpine railway journeys, each of which starts from the high mountain resort of Kandersteg deep in the heart of Switzerland.
The first journey takes the traveller north to Spiez and then to Zweisimmen on trains of the famous Bern-Lotschberg-Simplon Railway. Here a change is made to the luxurious metre gauge Superpanoramic Express which heads for Montreux on the Swiss Riviera at the foot of the Vaudoir Alps. Then its back to the standard gauge rails of the Swiss Federal Railways past the imposing Chateau de Chillon and through the Rhone Valley to Brig where the BLS is waiting for the last leg to Kandersteg.
The second journey is to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe and the second highest in the world. The long climb to an incredible 3454 metres above sea level begins in Interlaken and takes passengers to an ice-bound world between the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains. This journey to the ’top of Europe’ is perhaps the greatest railway journey of them all.
The last journey is southward from Kandersteg on the BLS which clings to the mountainside to Brig where the famous Glacier Express is waiting. The bright red ’slowest express train in the world’ twists and turns as it climbs through the Alps to Andermatt. The onward route is now over the awesome Gotthard line to Luzern. Here the narrow gauge trains of the Brunig line takes passengers back over the Alps to Interlaken and finally to Kandersteg.
This one hour documentary programme with commentary by actor Martin Oldfield, shows the trains and the magnificent scenery through which they run. Many of the towns along the way are visited as well.
